There’s nothing like a good holiday romance . . .

Welcome to the Holiday Gifts of Love Blog Hop!

(Need to get back to the list? Just click here.)

Along with more than 200 other authors, I’m opening my virtual doors, and giving you a peek into one my favorite parts of the holiday – the holiday romance.

Hot spiced cider, a cold, stormy day, and me, curling up with a feel-good book – that is what I consider the perfect day this time of year. I am a sucker for the holiday anthologies: stories of redemption, lost love restored, new love found. Any story that has me crying happy tears is a winner.

I love falling for the hero, relating to the heroine, watching their love blossom, falter, and finally triumph. It is the addiction, and the joy of romance – finding my way to that happy ending. Holiday romance has that extra tingle, which just pulls me in faster, tugs at my heart more. Ahhhhh – I get sentimental just thinking about it.

Now it’s your turn to share: what is your favorite holiday romance?

Leave your answer in the comments, along with your email, and you will be entered to win a fab holiday gift from me.

Love is in the Fall

Welcome to the Autumn’s Harvest Hop! I hope you’re having a great time, jumping from blog to blog, finding out a bit more about us. (Need to go back to the blog list? Just click here.)

I was asked to write a post on Fall – anything to do with it – and this is what popped into my mind.

On a crisp, cold Fall day, I fell in love – not with a man, but with a country.

That country is Britain, and for me, there is one word for it. Magical.

It has inspired my stories, my genre (paranormal and fantasy) – and has been my heart home for more than 15 years.

Where else can I stand where Romans have stood, where a wall stretched for 73 miles to define the far border of an empire?

View of the Wall from Housesteads

See a play, in a faithful reproduction of Shakespeare’s theatre, not far from where the original stood?

Shakespeare’s Globe

Or walk in the footsteps of a Time Lord, an immortal named Jack, and a secret part of the government known as Torchwood?

Water Tower, Cardiff Bay AKA: The Hub

Fall has everything I could ever want – Halloween, the scent of smoke and winter in the air, the world around me dressing up for the holidays. I take it in, treasure it, and fall in love with it all over again, every year. To spend that precious time in my favorite country adds a new layer of memories, another way to embrace the season.

For me, love is in the Fall – and it always will be.

What are your favorite Fall memories? Leave yours in the comments and you are entered to win not only a fun prize from me, but another entry for the hop grand prizes!

Here they are:

1st Grand Prize: A Kindle Fire or Nook Tablet
2nd Grand Prize: A $50 Amazon or B&N Gift Card
3rd Grand Prize: A Swag Pack that contains 10+ paperbacks, ebooks, 50+ bookmarks, cover flats, magnets, pens, coffee cozies, and more!

All the info on the hop is here.

Thanks for stopping by – and while you’re here, please take a moment and download your FREE copy of Rest For The Wicked, Book 1 of The Claire Wiche Chronicles.

You can get it at Amazon, Smashwords, or Kobo.

Until next time – read on – and Happy Holidays!

cheers,

~Cate

Book 3 is coming – time for a sneak peek! Or two :)

Happy Wednesday, everyone! I have been working on the final details for Book 3 of The Claire Wiche Chronicles, and it will be live for Halloween, as planned. I’m thrilled, and nervous – this one is a bit different from the last two books. But I’m getting great feedback so far.

Now for the sneak peeks. :)

Here is the gorgeous cover.

The artwork is once again by my friend, and the incredibly talented artist, Nadica Boskovska, and the cover design is by Christine Pope at Indie Author Services – who seriously rocks. (She will be redoing my cover for Rest For The Wicked so it matches the other two. Can’t wait to unveil the new version!)

And here is the second sneak peek – an excerpt from the book. Just for you. :)

Humming Monster Mash, Claire reached up to hang another bat in the window display, then stood back to assess.

She loved Halloween—and not for the obvious reasons attached to her name, or her reputation as the local witch. For her, it was all about the kids.

Their laughter as they ran from door to door, the costumes that ranged from an old sheet to designer worthy, the joy and excitement they left in their wake. All of it had her decorating weeks earlier than she needed, just to see the anticipation. And keeping a stash of candy under the counter for those bold enough to ask.

Now, with Halloween tomorrow, she put aside the headaches, the vision, the dream, and embraced the sheer fun of the holiday. Already, the preparation eased the weight of the fist pressed against her heart. She stood back, assessing what she hoped would be the last touches to her window—

“More decorations? Jeez, Claire, did you leave any for the rest of town?”

She turned to find Annie leaning against the front counter, arms crossed and a wicked smile on her face.

“A few. And look who’s talking about overkill—this is, what, your fifth costume change in as many days?”

Annie twirled, her heavy black cloak belling out around her. “I came as myself today. A witch.”

Claire shook her head and skirted the counter, pulling out her costume for the day. When she appeared wearing the veiled witch’s hat and velvet cloak, Annie burst out laughing.

“Great minds think alike.” Leaning in, she poked at one of the plastic spiders caught in the net veil covering Claire’s face. “Nice touch. Skin crawling, but nice.”

“I thought so.” Claire reached under the counter, grabbing the already full bowl of candy—and spotted the extra-large smoothie sitting on the granite, along with a sandwich that could have fed both of them. “Is that just breakfast? Or can I spread it out?”

“Aren’t you the funny girl today?” She slid the smoothie forward, smiled over it. “Breakfast.” Then the sandwich. “Midmorning snack. We’ll talk about lunch—I’m thinking the twelve ounce porterhouse from Billie’s Pub—”

Claire nearly choked. “Twelve ounce—”

“With the extra portion of wedge fries.”

“Heaven above, Annie.” She shook her head. “You’ll be rolling me out of here in a week.”

“Ah—but you haven’t heard the rest of my master plan. Tomorrow: salad day, with some fish on the side. Then we bulk the next day. It goes on, trading off heavy with light. And you spend more time with your sensei, building up your strength along with your fighting skills.”

“Okay. A master plan.” Claire rubbed her face. “Do you have charts?”

Annie grinned. “And a graph.”

Laughter burst out of her. It felt good to laugh again. Really laugh. She planned on doing a great deal of it. “Can you open up? I know it’s a few minutes early, but I’m in the mood for people, and some fun.”

“You’re the boss.” With the cloak swirling around her, Annie strode over to the door—and jumped backward when it burst open just after she flipped the deadbolt. “Son of a—hey, are you okay?”

Claire took off her hat and moved to the door, understanding Annie’s question when she saw the woman’s face. She wrapped one arm around the trembling shoulders, led her to the reading table at the back of the shop and lowered her to the one of the chairs. Kneeling in front of the woman, Claire took her hand.

“Just relax, now. Take your time—you’re safe here.”

Dark brown eyes stared at her, nearly black in her shock pale face. Swallowing, she clutched Claire’s hand, her voice so low Claire had to lean in to hear it.

“I don’t know if you remember me—my name is Regina, my daughter and I come into your shop every year, during the Summer Solstice . . .”

“The festival. Yes, I remember.”

Some of the panic eased from her face. “My daughter, Hillary loves it here so much—I’m recently divorced, and we decided to make a new start. I bought the big Victorian on the hill—”

“The devil house?” Annie shrugged when they both looked up at her. “Sorry—just popped out. We all thought it was haunted when we were kids. The man who lived there—Mr. McCarran—completely creeped me out.”

Claire raised her eyebrows, decided to save the tongue lashing for later. “Are you quite finished?”

“I just thought you might—yeah.” Hunching inside the cloak, she crossed her arms.

Claire almost smiled—until she turned back and met Regina’s eyes. “Children’s tales, Regina, nothing more—”

“I think she may be right.” Her grip on Claire’s hand became a vise, the rings Claire wore digging into her skin. Ignoring the flare of pain—she had felt worse, not so long ago—Claire sandwiched her hand. “Oh, God—what if she’s right?”

“Take a breath, Regina. That’s it.” Claire couldn’t use her power to soothe anymore, so she used her voice, her tone gentle, soothing as she talked Regina down from a panic attack. “Slow breaths, just focus on each one.” The death grip on her hand eased. “Now, tell me what brought you here.”

“I heard,” embarrassment flashed over the fear, “that you can see ghosts, sense them.”

Claire didn’t know how, but what happened up in Huntsville leaked out, and she instantly became the resident ghost expert, along with Simon. To say his church board was not happy would have been a gross understatement. But his congregation already adored him, and to a person, stood in his defense.

“I can. What is—”

“It’s my daughter, Hillary.” Tears slid down Regina’s face. Claire tightened her grip. “I think—oh, God—I think she might be haunted.”

It’s official! Tales From The Mist is ready to tingle your spine

Welcome to the official release of Tales From The Mist- a collection of stories that step out of the ordinary world.

buy it at Amazon!

I am thrilled to be a part of this book. My story, The Messenger, is joined by tales from some incredibly talented authors. Here’s a sneak peek of mine:

“I just need an hour, Jamie.” Sarah cleared her throat when her voice threatened to break. If Jamie noticed, he was too polite to comment. He had always been Sarah’s favorite local guide, and he was too easy to like, for his generous personality, for his sheer joy and love of the history he introduced to her tour groups. “Take them shopping on Sauchiehall—they will love you for it.”

“Atmosphere and retail therapy. Perhaps they are due a break from my historical onslaught. It will give them the chance to find outfits for the costume party.” He smiled, ran one hand through the dark, curling hair that brushed his shoulders. The smile faded as his dark blue eyes studied her, his concern threatening to free the grief she fought so hard to keep buried. “Is there anything I can do, Sarah?”

“Just keep them occupied. If they ask, I had a personal emergency.”

“If you need to talk—”

“I just need some time, without people.” She evaded the hand he held out to her, the care he offered—care she so badly needed, but no longer deserved. Twisting her fingers together to keep from reaching out, she backed away from him.

“Sarah.” The gentle way he said her name stopped her in her tracks. “I am worried for you.” This time she couldn’t move when he stepped to her, cradled her cheek. “You look—ruined. Like you want to chuck it all and give in to whatever has gone and broken you. Let me help you put the pieces together.”

“I can’t,” she whispered. Tears stung her eyes. She retreated before she made a fool of herself in front of him, in front of her tour group. “I’m sorry, Jamie.”

She forced herself not to run as she turned the corner, leaving him and her group behind. The weight of his care hurt almost as much as her grief; she let the tears slip free, ignoring the curious stares. The sight of the Necropolis, crowning the hill above Glasgow’s ancient cathedral, eased a bit of that weight. Sarah moved faster, let the wind dry her tears as she pulled her suede jacket closed against the cold of the grey October afternoon.

The isolated cemetery suited her need to be completely alone. No well-meaning, friendly tour member clamoring for a photo op, needing her help, or asking yet another question—only her and the worn stone monuments.

She snapped a photo of a beautifully carved tombstone sunk into the side of the hill, shed some of her constant despair as she climbed the steep path. Reaching the top, she walked through the open wrought iron gates, admiring the detail, and anticipated the peace of an hour with only herself for company.

It all went downhill from there.

So, here it is – 25 random things you probably don’t know about me.

Enjoy!

Shakespeare’s Globe, South Bank, London

2. On the travel theme – I travel solo, and have done so, armed with a backpack and my camera, for the last 15 years.

3. I love musicals. For years, I owned more soundtracks than I did popular music.

4. I spent 8 years working as a costume mistress in equity theatres.

5. I didn’t attend my first concert until I was 22 – one of Elton John’s many “farewell tours.”

6. I can write in iambic pentameter. Yes, I am a Shakespeare geek. Smiley

7. I plan my trips to London around the theatre. I haven’t been to a single play where I live, but I will happily fly 5,000 miles for some of the best theatre in the world.

8. I grew up with the twins who played Tabitha on the series Bewitched. I am still friends with one of them.

9. The first joint of my index finger is double-jointed.

10. My father was a flight instructor out of Orange County Airport (California), and I spent nearly every weekend flying with him. I have seen the top of Catalina Island many times, but never the rest!

12. I love my car – a sporty red Scion xD, but I hate to drive. HATE IT.

13. Friday the 13th has ALWAYS been a lucky day for me.

14. I love cemeteries.

15. I am a rabid Doctor Who fan – and I have even touched a TARDIS. Cheesy

16. I have walked among the trilithons at Stonehenge, and watched the sun rise over it.

17. I hung out with kangaroos, basking on a hill in the autumn sun, at Steve Irwin’s zoo in Queensland, Australia.

18. I built sandcastles with my family in a yearly contest, and we won first place 10 years in a row.

19. I was an actor and a dancer in high school/college, and won several awards, including best actress. Some of my most treasured memories are tied to those plays and musicals.

20. I was a seamstress in my college theatre costume shop, and I can make anything without a pattern.

21. I am a huge history buff – and standing where history was made gives me chills.

22. I am a direct descendent of Betsy Ross. I guess the sewing prowess is genetic!

23. I played guitar for eight years. My favorite riff – the intro of Stairway to Heaven. I can still play it.

Guest post with Louis Sharman – The Attraction of Non-Fiction Crime Books

I often get requests through my contact page from people wanting to guest post, and I don’t often accept them.

But this one, from Louis Sharman, intrigued me – and when I read it, I knew I had to have him on my blog.

I love non-fiction crime books. They are the skeletons in closets, the dark secrets in the shadows. My first was Helter Skelter, dealing with the Charles Manson murder spree. Not exactly light reading for a 12 year old – yes, I was precocious. :)

But it was fascinating, and horrific, and riveting. I was hooked.

So, let me turn it over to Louis.

There is something about non-fiction crime books that just works – the stories, the personalities and the realisation that this stuff actually happened is a heady mix.

In the publishing world there are a plethora of genres and sub-genres for people to dip into, but for some readers there is nothing more fascinating than finding out about an often nasty character and the terrible things they did. The more grisly the situation, the greater the interest it can inspire.

Rather than being a sign that the reader in question is completely barmy or bloodthirsty, it is simply a long-term phenomenon: people enjoy reading these tales.

Of course, not all true crime stories are going to be focused on a glamorous or notorious serial murderer – white-collar crimes can be just as devious if not as bloody – but all share the ability to take you into a world that is essentially your own, but is populated by the sort of people you fear.

Truth is stranger than fiction

Life has a habit of being utterly bizarre, which is part of what makes non-fiction so fascinating, since you know that everything that you are reading actually happened at some point – it has not just been dreamt up by some creative young novelist. This adds weight to every word of the book and makes it much more thrilling when the story takes twists and turns.

It is one thing for someone to tell you an exciting story, but quite another to say that it happened to someone they knew. In this way, you almost feel implicated in the tale, particularly if it is something that happened during your lifetime. You wonder how the criminal got away with it and how you would have reacted if you had encountered them.

To a certain extent these are ideas that a fictional story will inspire too, but the knowledge that the book is real makes it all the more poignant.

Digging deeper

Another part of the attraction for some people is the way you can dig a little deeper when you come across a story that fascinates you. Whether you decide to check the National Archives (or an equivalent organisation) for official records of the criminal in question, or simply find another book about them, you are able to develop your knowledge and come across new perspectives.

In contrast, a fiction book is often a little limited in this way, since you are restricted to the material published by the author – unless you indulge in fan fiction you find online. There will always be critical discussions of the best books – both fiction and non-fiction – but true stories offer greater scope for research.

These investigations need not be limited to just the person at the centre of the crimes; you can read around the society they inhabited, the state of the nation during their lifetime or simply the quality of police intelligence they would have come up against. All of these factors can help you appreciate what that criminal did and what this can teach us about humanity.

Author Bio: Louis Sharman is an avid blogger and writes for a plethora of subjects ranging from book reviews to suggesting the importance of ebooks in modern culture. He lives in London, UK and enjoys reviewing the most recent true stories about crime. He is also an amateur photographer and has a great collection of photography books.

Thank you, Louis, for sharing this wonderful post.

Now for the rest of you – do you read these books? What was your first? Your favorite?

I hope you enjoyed delving into this topic as much as I did.

Until next time – read on. With the lights burning. :)

cheers,

~Cate
